Animal Transportation to Mauritius

Pet Transport to and from Mauritius

Bringing a pet to Mauritius is a wonderful life project, whether you are relocating with a dog, cat or another companion animal. However, it calls for rigorous preparation. Import permit, veterinary protocol, mandatory examinations, quarantine booking, choice of airline and IATA-compliant travel crate: every step must be planned several weeks in advance to travel with your pet to Mauritius or arrange their return journey.

Air Transport Animal organises international pet transport and relocation to and from Mauritius for dogs, cats and many other domestic animals, including birds, reptiles, ferrets and other exotic pets, subject to the regulations applicable to each species.

From putting together the administrative file through to your companion’s arrival at destination, our teams coordinate all formalities with the relevant authorities and airlines to ensure a journey in the best possible conditions of safety and comfort.

We advise you on the most suitable transport mode (cabin, air-conditioned aircraft hold or air freight, depending on your pet’s species, breed and weight), check the IATA-compliant travel crate, arrange ground transport from your home with our pet taxi, provide assistance at airport check-in and track your pet until arrival in Mauritius.

By choosing our PREMIUM package, you can entrust us with all or part of the administrative and veterinary formalities. Our pet relocation services to Mauritius are designed to give you complete peace of mind throughout the process.

One key point to remember: allow at least 6 to 8 weeks between starting the first formalities and your pet’s departure. Certain administrative steps, particularly obtaining the import permit and the mandatory veterinary examinations, involve fixed processing times that must be planned for.

Pets That Can Be Transported to or from Mauritius

At Air Transport Animal, we notably arrange air transport for:

  • Dogs
  • Cats
  • Rabbits
  • Ferrets
  • Birds
  • Rodents
  • Certain reptiles and other species, subject to applicable regulations

Please note that certain dog breeds are prohibited from entering Mauritian territory, in accordance with local regulations. This is notably the case for several breeds considered potentially dangerous, such as:

  • American Pit Bull Terrier
  • American Staffordshire Terrier
  • Staffordshire Bull Terrier
  • Blue nose pit bull
  • Red nose pit bull
  • Japanese Tosa
  • Dogo Argentino
  • Fila Brasileiro
  • Boerboel

Other breeds may be imported only if they have an official pedigree, including:

  • Alaskan Malamute
  • Bull Mastiff
  • Cane Corso
  • Dobermann
  • Kangal
  • Neapolitan Mastiff
  • Presa Canario
  • Rhodesian Ridgeback
  • Rottweiler

Depending on your pet’s morphology, some airlines may also apply their own transport restrictions. Brachycephalic dogs and cats (French Bulldog, English Bulldog, Pug, Boxer, Persian, Exotic Shorthair…) face a higher respiratory risk during the flight. In these cases, we guide you toward the safest transport solution, in line with airline recommendations and IATA regulations.

Before making any pet transport arrangements for Mauritius, we systematically check whether your pet is authorised to enter the territory.

Pet Transport Requirements for Mauritius

Importing a pet to Mauritius is regulated by the Division of Veterinary Services of the Ministry of Agro-Industry, Food Production and Security. Mauritian authorities apply particularly strict health regulations to protect the island from the introduction of animal diseases, especially rabies. Whether you are preparing your relocation to Mauritius or your pet’s return from Mauritius to France, it is essential to plan the various formalities several weeks before departure.

As requirements may change depending on the country of origin and the species concerned, Air Transport Animal maintains constant regulatory monitoring and helps you put together your file.

Key Notes

To prepare your pet’s journey in the best conditions, several steps are essential:

  1. Your pet must be identified with a microchip that meets international standards.
  2. They must have a European pet passport or an official vaccination record showing their identification.
  3. All vaccinations must be up to date, particularly the rabies vaccination, given more than 30 days and less than 1 year before departure.
  4. Your pet must have lived in their country of origin for at least 6 months before import to Mauritius, in accordance with current health requirements.
  5. An import permit application must be filed with the Mauritian veterinary authorities before departure.
  6. A quarantine place must be booked before your pet’s arrival on the territory.
  7. The import permit generally takes 3 to 4 weeks to be issued, and is only issued once all documents have been received.
  8. If travelling in the hold or as freight, your pet must travel in an IATA-approved cage.

Finally, all veterinary examinations and official documents must be validated before boarding.

Our team can handle all or part of these steps so you can prepare your departure with complete peace of mind.

Required Documents

To bring a dog or cat to Mauritius, several official documents must be gathered before departure.

You will need the following documents in particular:

  • Import permit issued by the Division of Veterinary Services of the Ministry of Agro-Industry. This document is mandatory before booking transport.
  • European pet passport (or official vaccination record) showing the microchip number and all vaccinations received.
  • International health certificate issued by an official veterinarian within the 7 days before departure, confirming that your pet is fit to travel and meets Mauritian health requirements.
  • Rabies antibody titration test result, carried out at an approved laboratory and dated less than 1 year before travel.
  • Results of mandatory tests and screenings, where required for the species concerned.
  • Quarantine booking, mandatory before your pet’s arrival in Mauritius.

To bring a dog back from Mauritius to France or another European Union country, additional formalities may be required depending on the country of origin and current regulations. Our teams also support you with these steps.

That’s it! Your companion is finally ready to join you and enjoy the beach, the sun, and swims in the ocean.

Quarantine Conditions and Duration Upon Arrival in Mauritius

To preserve its rabies-free status, Mauritius requires mandatory quarantine for all imported dogs and cats, even when all health formalities have been completed before departure.

This isolation period allows the Mauritian veterinary services to confirm that your pet poses no health risk before they are formally admitted into Mauritius.

How to Book Quarantine and When?

Booking quarantine is a mandatory step in the process of transporting live animals to Mauritius.

It must be arranged with the Division of Veterinary Services at the same time as the import permit application. As places at quarantine centres are limited, we recommend booking several weeks before your planned departure date.

Air Transport Animal can handle this step as part of our PREMIUM package, following up your file with the Mauritian authorities.

What is the Quarantine Period for Pets?

On arrival in Mauritius, dogs and cats are placed in quarantine for a minimum period of 5 days.

This period may be extended by the veterinary authorities if documents are missing, if certain tests need to be completed, or if a health issue is found during arrival checks.

Strictly following the veterinary protocol before departure generally helps avoid any extension of this period.

What Are the Quarantine Conditions?

During quarantine, your pet is housed in an approved facility under the supervision of the Mauritian veterinary services.

Throughout this period, their health is monitored daily by qualified professionals. The authorities also check that their identification, veterinary documents and all required tests comply with requirements before entry onto the territory.

Once the quarantine period is complete and all checks have been carried out and approved, your companion can finally join their new home and start their new life in Mauritius.

Thanks to our expertise in international pet transport, we support you at every step so this mandatory period goes as smoothly as possible.
