What Pets Can Be Transported to or from Martinique?

Animal transport to Martinique is available for a wide range of domestic species, subject to specific pet import requirements and carrier regulations:

Cats & Dogs

Most cats and dogs are allowed to travel to Martinique. However, the importation of Category 1 attack dogs (such as pit bulls, Boerboels, or Tosas without a pedigree) into French territory and overseas departments is strictly prohibited. Category 2 dogs are subject to strict airline acceptance conditions.

Brachycephalic (Short-Nosed) Breeds

Short-nosed breeds such as French Bulldogs, Boxers, Pugs, or Persian cats face increased respiratory risks in the hold. Many commercial airlines (such as Air France or Air Caraïbes) refuse to carry brachycephalic pets in the standard hold or cabin. The safest and most reliable alternative is specialized cargo transport with controlled pressure and temperature.

Exotic Pets

Ferrets, rabbits, rodents, birds (such as parrots or canaries), and other exotic species are subject to specific protocols. Importing exotic pets into Martinique may require prior authorization, CITES permits for protected species, or approval from the Ministry of Agriculture and the local DAAF authorities.

What Are Martinique’s Pet Import Requirements?

When traveling with your pet to Martinique from metropolitan France or an EU country, you must comply with the following French and European regulations:

  • Mandatory Microchip Identification: Your pet must be identified with an ISO 11784/11785-compliant microchip implanted by a licensed veterinarian. Tattoo identification is accepted only if it was applied before July 3, 2011, and remains fully legible.
  • Up-to-Date Rabies Vaccination: Rabies vaccination is mandatory to travel to Martinique. The vaccine is valid only 21 days after the primary vaccination or booster for pets that are at least 12 weeks old. The minimum age for travel is generally 15 weeks (3 months).
  • European Pet Passport or Health Records: An official pet passport issued by an authorized veterinarian must accompany your animal and include complete vaccination records.
  • Veterinary Health Certificate: A certified health certificate issued by your veterinarian must be completed within 10 days before departure, confirming that your pet is healthy and fit to travel.
  • Parasite Treatment: Internal and external parasite treatments are strongly recommended before departure.

Note on Quarantine

There is no mandatory quarantine upon arrival at Martinique Aimé Césaire International Airport (Le Lamentin) for pets arriving from mainland France or EU member states, provided that all required documents are valid and all health requirements are met during inspection.

What Pet Owners Say About Us

“I have a small rodent, and I was extremely worried about him—fearing that people might have ill intentions toward a rat, or that the transport itself might kill him… In the end, the journey went very well, and picking him up was very easy (you just need to follow the GPS carefully to find the premises). Thanks for Roycephus!”

“I am absolutely delighted with the service provided by ATA! My dog travelled in perfect conditions: the transport was perfectly organized, the follow-up was impeccable, and the entire team showed great professionalism and genuine care.”

“I recommend them wholeheartedly. They are attentive, handle all administrative procedures, and are highly responsive—an ideal choice for transporting live animals. Thank you!.”
