The breeds of dogs, breeds of cats, and animals traveling by freight

What animals travel only by cargo?

To fly your dog, cat or any other pet, you must comply with strict admissions rules. Airlines accept travel for most breeds of dogs regardless of size or weight. These characteristics will determine whether your pet will travel in the cabin, in the hold or by cargo.

However, certain rules apply to certain breeds of dogs and cats. On the other hand, some animals are only accepted as freight. As companies each have their own admission rules, this list may vary depending on your destination.

DOGS TRAVELING BY FREIGHT ONLY

1st category dogs are prohibited in the cabin and hold of aircraft. These so-called “attack” dogs are dogs comparable by their morphological characteristics to dogs of the American Staffordshire terrier (pit bull), mastiff (boerbull) and Tosa breed.

2nd category dogs are also mostly prohibited in the cabin and hold of planes. These so-called “guard or defense” dogs are the American Staffordshire terrier dogs, Rottweiler dogs.

These dog breeds can travel by freight! If you would like to transport a dog in these categories contact our animal transport experts!

Brachycephalic dog breeds are generally prohibited in the cabin and in the hold on most airlines (banned by Air France since 2014 for example). The dog breeds affected are French Bulldog, English Bulldog, Boxer, Pug, Shih Tzu, Pekingese, Cavalier King Charles, Belgian Griffon, etc. Indeed, their special morphology: a flattened face and a skull wider than long, can make them victims of fatal plane accidents, particularly due to respiratory problems. As for 2nd category dogs, the solution for breeds with crushed noses to travel by plane is freight.

CATS TRAVELING BY FREIGHT ONLY

Concerning the breeds of cats prohibited in the cabins and holds of planes, these also include the brachycephalic cat breeds: the Persian, the British and the Exotic Shorthair for example. These breeds are prohibited in the cabin and in the hold of the plane for the same as brachycephalic dog breeds. Their fragile health caused by their morphology can cause respiratory problems during the flight.

Therefore, brachycephalic animals (dogs or cats) will have to travel by freight.

OTHER ANIMALS PROHIBITED ON PLANES

Regarding other animals prohibited on planes, it is prohibited to travel with endangered animals, except in exceptional cases. The variations in airline regulations regarding NAC (new pets) do not allow us to provide a list of prohibited animals. Check out our dedicated NAC FAQ page for more information on this topic!
